Nippon Express Co., Ltd., a key member of NIPPON EXPRESS HOLDINGS, INC., has launched an ambitious project titled “NX Universal Harmonious Work Warehouse.” This initiative seeks to transform logistics by incorporating cutting-edge technology to boost efficiency and foster a more inclusive workplace. As part of this project, Nippon Express has introduced cutting-edge “next-generation mobility systems” at its Kazo Warehouse in Saitama, located north of Tokyo.

Addressing Industry Challenges

The Japanese logistics sector faces significant challenges, including an anticipated shortage of truck drivers and warehouse staff. Stricter overtime regulations for truck drivers, effective from April 2024, have compounded these issues, alongside the broader demographic challenges of a declining birthrate and an aging population. In response to these pressures, Nippon Express is committed to enhancing productivity through technological innovation and improving workplace environments.

Introducing Advanced Technology

The “NX Universal Harmonious Work Warehouse” project seeks to address these challenges by incorporating state-of-the-art logistics robots and work-assistance equipment. The first phase of the project involves the deployment of short-range mobility systems developed by WHILL Inc., a Tokyo-based company. These next-generation mobility systems are designed to support individuals with mobility impairments, allowing them to perform tasks such as picking and other warehouse operations more efficiently.

By combining these mobility systems with automated guided vehicles (AGVs), autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and other unmanned transport solutions, Nippon Express aims to build a more accessible and efficient workplace. This approach not only alleviates physical strain on employees but also enhances overall operational efficiency.

Fostering Inclusivity and Diversity

Nippon Express has partnered with Mirairo Inc., an Osaka-based firm specialising in universal design solutions, to promote diverse work styles and inclusivity. This collaboration will help foster awareness and acceptance of varied work environments, ensuring that employees of all abilities can contribute effectively. The project is designed to break down barriers and make warehouse work more inclusive for individuals who have previously faced difficulties in such roles.

Future Plans and Expansion

Nippon Express plans to extend the “Universal Harmonious Work Warehouse” initiative to multiple locations, progressively creating environments that accommodate an even wider range of work styles and abilities. The company also aims to convert its accumulated expertise into solution services in the future, further advancing its commitment to innovation and inclusivity.

As part of its long-term vision, Nippon Express seeks to enhance corporate value and address societal issues, positioning itself as a prominent player in the global logistics market. The company is dedicated to fostering a work environment where diverse employees can thrive, leveraging digital transformation (DX) to revitalise its organisation and secure a robust workforce.

Commitment to a Sustainable Future

Nippon Express remains steadfast in its mission to improve workplace conditions and operational efficiency. Through its commitment to technological advancement and inclusive practices, the company is paving the way for a more sustainable and dynamic logistics industry. As it continues to implement these innovations, Nippon Express aims to lead the way in creating a future where all employees can maximise their potential and contribute to a thriving, equitable workplace.
