Chris Maslin’s Journey into Mentorship
Chris Maslin, the founder of Go EO, a company that helps business owners transition to employee-owned trusts, has been actively volunteering at Bethany School in Kent, mentoring the next generation of business leaders. Known for his success in building service-based businesses, Chris now dedicates his time and expertise to guiding students through the school’s Young Enterprise initiative.
From Business Success to Youth Empowerment
Chris launched his entrepreneurial career in 2009 with the establishment of Maslins, a firm specialising in accountancy. In 2021, he decided to step back from the business, transferring most of the company’s shares to an employee ownership trust. This experience proved so rewarding that Chris founded Go EO, which supports other business owners in creating employee-owned organisations.
Young Enterprise: Shaping Future Entrepreneurs
In 2016, inspired by peers already involved in mentoring, Chris joined Bethany School’s Young Enterprise program. This initiative, run by the charity Young Enterprise, collaborates with students, teachers, parents, and businesses to help shape a prosperous future for young people. Through hands-on employability, enterprise, and financial education, the program combats youth unemployment, unlocks potential beyond academics, and empowers students to thrive in their careers and life.
Support from Bethany School Leadership
Bethany School’s headmaster, Francie Healy, strongly supports the Young Enterprise scheme. Bethany School has been running the Young Enterprise programme for many years. Since 1995, 575 ‘achievers’ have participated. The programme has consistently been popular and successful, providing students with essential skills to thrive in the competitive business environment.
Practical Business Experience for Students
Anthony Khan, head of student enterprise and business studies at Bethany School, plays a crucial role in the program. He highlights, “The scheme offers pupils real-world business experience that complements their academic studies. We offer it to Year 12 students as an optional extracurricular activity.”
Chris Maslin’s Hands-On Approach
Chris shares his enthusiasm for mentoring: “It’s rewarding to see pupils gain firsthand experience in business. Watching them brainstorm ideas, aim for big profits, engage with real customers, and navigate team dynamics is inspiring. Running a business is challenging, and this experience will undoubtedly help them in their future careers.”
Guidance
With his background in accounting, Chris emphasizes the importance of sound financial management and taking proactive steps to achieve business goals. His guidance ensures students grasp the practical aspects of running a business, from managing finances to fostering teamwork.
Celebrating Achievements and Community Support
Chris finds attending student competitions particularly fulfilling. I’m continually impressed by the level of professionalism displayed in their work. Seeing Bethany students take pride in their achievements is fantastic.”
He also acknowledges the support from his colleagues at Maslins, who have contributed financially and shared their expertise with the program. This community effort enriches the educational experience, preparing students for future success in the business world.
