The 2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum (WSTDF), hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), began today in Beijing. The forum, themed “Science and Technology for the Future,” highlights the importance of global cooperation and collective effort in addressing pressing issues through scientific innovation, promoting sustainable development, and advancing technological research.

Building a Shared Future for Mankind

The forum’s strategic direction is guided by the global initiatives proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping. These initiatives aim to harness global wisdom to achieve high-quality development and promote international scientific and cultural exchanges. The WSTDF is positioned as a crucial platform to drive global cooperation and facilitate dialogue between countries and regions on scientific innovation. Attendees are set to engage in in-depth discussions that will shape the future of international science and technology.

The opening ceremony featured an exhibition honouring Liu Hui (225-295), a pioneering figure in classical Chinese mathematical theories, providing a historical context for the forum’s discussions. Liu Hui’s contributions in the realm of mathematics are considered foundational in shaping modern scientific thought, exemplifying China’s long-standing history of scientific discovery and progress.

A Gathering of Global Thought Leaders and Experts

The forum brings together over 350 distinguished guests from 33 countries and regions, including 14 Nobel Prize winners, Turing Award recipients, Lasker Award honorees, and leaders from international scientific organisations. Additionally, 41 academicians from both domestic and international institutions, as well as more than 200 experts and scholars from prestigious universities, research institutions, and enterprises, are participating in the forum.

This distinguished group of individuals represents a wealth of knowledge and expertise, making the WSTDF a truly global event focused on driving forward scientific breakthroughs and technological advancements. The participation of such esteemed individuals underscores the forum’s importance in shaping the future of science and technology globally.

Promoting Global Scientific Cooperation

The WSTDF focuses on strengthening international cooperation and addressing the shared challenges of the global scientific community. Discussions will cover key issues, such as the role of science and technology in sustainable development, the future of artificial intelligence, the importance of global health research, and the need for inclusive innovation that benefits all regions.

Forum attendees are particularly focused on the importance of South-South cooperation and North-South dialogue, which is expected to stimulate joint efforts towards overcoming the challenges posed by climate change, energy sustainability, and access to technology. The forum’s collaborative approach is designed to foster an open environment for scientific dialogue, enabling the exchange of ideas and knowledge.

Shaping the Future of Scientific Development

The forum is not only a reflection of current technological advancements but also a platform for future scientific collaboration. The discussions and initiatives emerging from the forum are set to influence the direction of global scientific research for years to come. As the world faces increasingly complex challenges, the importance of collective action and international cooperation has never been more vital.

The WSTDF’s ongoing success since its inception in 2019 has helped to establish it as an essential platform for promoting scientific dialogue and building a trustworthy global cooperation network. By connecting thought leaders, innovators, and policymakers, the forum is poised to play a critical role in shaping the future of science and technology.

The 2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum will conclude on October 30, 2024. It is expected to lead to new collaborations, partnerships, and innovations that will benefit the global scientific community and help address the world’s most pressing challenges.
