Naturewatch Foundation Announces 2024 World Animal Day Grant Recipients
Major Grant Awarded to Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary
Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary, situated in St. John, Barbados, has been awarded the primary grant of £8,718. This funding will enable the sanctuary to continue and expand its vital work in rescuing and rehabilitating abused and abandoned animals. Established to address both immediate animal welfare needs and long-term community issues, Ocean Acres is a beacon of hope for many animals in the region.
The grant will support several key initiatives:
- Stray Population Control: Monthly spay and neuter sessions are essential for managing the stray animal population. By reducing the number of unplanned litters, Ocean Acres aims to decrease the number of animals suffering from neglect and abandonment.
- Rescue and Rehabilitation: The sanctuary provides crucial care for injured and neglected animals, helping them recover and find new homes. The grant will enhance their facilities and capabilities, ensuring better treatment and quicker recovery for the animals in their care.
- Community Outreach and Education: Workshops and educational sessions will be conducted to promote responsible animal care within the community. These initiatives aim to address the root causes of neglect and foster a culture of compassion towards animals.
Environmental Protection Organisation
In addition to the main grant, a mini-grant of £1,500 has been awarded to the Sudanese Animal Care and Environmental Protection Organisation. This grant is crucial for their ongoing work in providing care amidst the challenging conditions caused by the ongoing civil war in Sudan.
The mini-grant will support the following initiatives:
- Vaccination: Providing essential vaccinations for donkeys, horses, and dogs that have been displaced by the conflict. These vaccinations are vital for preventing the spread of diseases among vulnerable animals.
- Education: Empowering local animal carers with knowledge and skills to improve their care practices. This educational component is essential for ensuring that the animals receive the best possible care despite the challenging circumstances.
Mustafa Bakrawi, the World Animal Day ambassador in Sudan, highlighted the urgent need for support in the region, stating, “The conditions for animals in Sudan have worsened due to the ongoing conflict. This grant will help alleviate some of the suffering and improve animal welfare by providing essential vaccinations and education.”
