The UK construction industry is on the cusp of a groundbreaking transformation as the AI Construction Training (ACT) programme prepares for its launch. Starting February 2025, ACT will provide free online training modules aimed at empowering professionals to lead AI-driven innovations. As part of the Innovate UK BridgeAI initiative, “AI in Construction: Skills for the Future,” the programme is being developed and implemented by Trilateral Research.

This forward-thinking initiative bridges the gap between AI’s technological advancements and their practical applications, enabling construction firms to unlock efficiency and innovation while staying competitive in a rapidly evolving market.

The Growing Role of AI in Construction

The construction sector faces mounting challenges, from labour shortages and complex project requirements to increasing pressure for sustainability. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers solutions that can redefine how the industry operates, improving efficiency, predicting potential risks, and supporting sustainable practices.

By integrating AI, construction firms can streamline project management, optimise resource use, and enhance overall safety and quality. However, a lack of understanding and expertise in AI implementation remains a barrier. The ACT programme addresses this gap, equipping small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) managers with the skills to adopt and deploy AI effectively, fostering innovation and growth across the sector.

Training Modules Designed for Success

The ACT programme offers a robust curriculum through four specialised modules, each designed to build foundational and practical knowledge:

  • Data and AI Fundamentals: Provides a clear understanding of AI’s capabilities and its relevance to construction.
  • Building AI Business Cases: Guides participants in creating compelling business cases to secure stakeholder support.
  • AI Project Management: Offers insights into managing AI projects, ensuring they deliver measurable and impactful outcomes.
  • Responsible AI Practices: Covers ethical and regulatory frameworks, emphasising sustainable and responsible implementation.

Programme Highlights

This cutting-edge training programme stands out for its interactive and accessible features:

  • Live Online Learning: Engaging, instructor-led sessions paired with practical exercises.
  • Industry Expert Insights: Training conducted by leading AI specialists and construction professionals.
  • Real-World Applications: Case studies showcasing successful AI integrations within the industry.
  • Networking Opportunities: Virtual forums for collaboration and knowledge exchange among participants.
  • Comprehensive Resources: Participants gain access to open-access tools, additional reading materials, and guidance for further learning.

Voices of Support

Sara El-Hanfy, Head of AI & Machine Learning at Innovate UK, emphasised the programme’s importance:
“ACT is a pivotal initiative that equips SME managers with the tools and expertise to embrace AI in construction. These modules are designed to ensure businesses can leverage AI to drive meaningful innovation and growth.”

Launch and Registration Details

ACT will launch in February 2025, running through March, with registrations now open. Its fully online format ensures nationwide accessibility, allowing participants to upgrade their skills without disrupting their daily work schedules.

A Game-Changer for UK Construction

The ACT programme is more than just training; it represents a leap forward for the UK construction industry. By equipping professionals with AI knowledge and practical tools, this initiative positions the sector for a future defined by innovation, sustainability, and competitive excellence.
