Manchester-based EV charging specialist, Charge-M8, has launched its latest product, the Libra dynamic load balancing device, designed to cater to EV charging installations globally. Available from September, this innovative solution allows multiple EV charger brands to be load balanced simultaneously via Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) platforms.
Ian Hughes, Technical Director at Charge-M8, commented: “We chose not to use directly connected load balancing for our commercial EV chargers due to concerns with reliability and accuracy over long distances. Our experience as installers has shown that the distance between the incoming supply and EV chargers can be significant, particularly in commercial installations, making directly connected CT clamps impractical.”
The decision to create a stand-alone device that works with any hardware and OCPP platform, and future-proofs both new and retrofit installations, was a logical progression.
“One of our key objectives was to make installation and commissioning straightforward for installers,” Hughes added. “The Libra device features 4G GSM communications as standard, with Ethernet and Wi-Fi available as fallback options, making installation an effortless process.”
Hughes went on to explain: “When consulting with our OCPP platform partners and installers, they asked us the following questions:
· Q: Could we include voltage readings and the ability to monitor current direction for both import and export?
A: We incorporated this feature into the device’s design.
· Q: Is there a restriction on the number of CT clamps the Libra device can handle?
A: The standard CT clamps are rated up to 120A, with higher-rated options up to 400A available upon request. For larger installations, optional Rogowski coils with a 110mmØ are suitable for 1kVA and above.
· Q: How simple is the commissioning process?
A: We’ve used the same 4.3” touchscreen from Charge-M8’s commercial EV chargers, making commissioning intuitive and user-friendly. No apps or Wi-Fi hotspots are needed, eliminating potential frustrations.”
Julian Smith, CEO of Charge-M8, added: “The introduction of the Libra DLB Device marks another significant milestone in our transformation into a leading manufacturer of commercial EV charging products. Our aim is to offer unparalleled commissioning and technical support for the global EV installer network.
“After rigorous prototype testing in the UK, Europe, the UAE, the US, and Canada since November 2023, the Libra is ready to be launched. With plug-and-play compatibility with over 40 OCPP platforms worldwide and an installer-friendly setup, this device is set to be a hit with EV installers.”
Charge-M8 is becoming well-known for workplace EV charging solutions. Approved by OZEV for both domestic and commercial installations, the company offers technical support from fully qualified installers. Recently, Charge-M8 was also accredited under the UK Trading Standards’ Buy with Confidence scheme, reaffirming its dedication to delivering excellent customer service and maintaining integrity.
With a wide variety of EV charging and load balancing options available, it’s always worth consulting with a specialist, rather than a generic call centre.
