Supporting Wellbeing Through Accessible Yoga
NHS patients in Staffordshire now have the opportunity to experience the benefits of yoga, thanks to a new initiative offering free chair yoga classes. Funded by Midlands-based volunteers from the British Wheel of Yoga (BWY), these sessions aim to support individuals who need extra assistance in maintaining their physical and mental well-being.
Held bi-weekly at Barlaston Village Hall, the classes are designed to help participants stay active, relax, and reconnect with their bodies in a supportive environment. By focusing on gentle movements, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques, chair yoga provides an accessible alternative for those who may find traditional yoga challenging.
A New Approach to Yoga for All
Chair yoga offers an inclusive way to experience the benefits of yoga, particularly for older adults and individuals with mobility challenges. Sarah Dean, a Trentham-based yoga teacher leading the sessions, was inspired to introduce chair yoga after recognising the difficulties some people faced with conventional postures.
“I’ve seen people arrive feeling stiff, stressed, and disconnected from their bodies, and leave with smiles on their faces, moving with greater ease, said Sarah. I wanted to create a space where yoga is accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical limitations.”
The sessions incorporate slow, mindful movements that improve flexibility and strength, helping participants develop a sense of inner calm. The focus on breathwork and relaxation enhances overall well-being, making yoga a valuable tool for both physical and mental health.
Transforming Lives Through Movement
Many participants have found the classes to be life-changing. Karen Foster, one of the attendees, shared her experience: “Chair yoga has had a profound impact on my life, enhancing both my physical well-being and mental clarity. The meditation leaves me feeling incredibly relaxed, and the best part is enjoying it with a wonderful group of people.”
For individuals who struggle with movement or balance, chair yoga offers a safe way to improve strength and mobility without the risk of strain or injury. The sessions foster a welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and included.
A Community Effort to Make Yoga Accessible
The initiative is part of BWY’s Yoga in Action campaign, which strives to remove financial and accessibility barriers, ensuring yoga reaches those who need it most. The BWY Midlands committee funds these sessions, allowing NHS-referred patients to attend for free.
Di O’Reilly, Chair of BWY, expressed the organisation’s commitment to making yoga more widely available: “We are delighted to back initiatives like this, providing comfort and fostering a sense of community for people in Staffordshire. As a charity, we’re dedicated to ensuring the benefits of yoga are accessible to all, and through Yoga in Action, we continue to bring yoga to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity.”
By offering free chair yoga classes, BWY is helping to improve the well-being of NHS patients in Staffordshire, reinforcing the power of yoga as a tool for healing, relaxation, and community support.
